What is ECMO?

ECMO refers to Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation. This is the technique of giving a prolonged respiratory and cardiac support to patients suffering from life threatening cardiac and respiratory failure. This technique is often employed in cases where conventional therapy becomes unresponsive. It is often mainly used for bridging the gap between heart and lung recovery or heart and lung transplantation. The machine is used by the medical personnel for sustaining life in cases where the lungs or heart of the patient do not function properly. However, this machine needs to be judiciously used in conditions where time appropriate medical therapy is needed. This is not a curative measure. Rather, it involves resting of the heart or lungs and giving them time to recover.

The unit is equipped with resuscitation services at all floors and rooms along with a round the clock monitoring system that allows close monitoring of the patients from both nursing station as well as bedside.
