Monsoon showers make us reach out for that hot steaming cup of tea and a plate of pakoras. The showers may have you craving for some good food, but this lovely weather is often accompanied by a number of infections and occasional bouts of flu. Thus, it is important to arm yourself against these ailments and avoid certain food items that may play the spoilsport. These include foods that are susceptible to build up of bacteria or deep fried street food. Green Leafy Vegetables
Though it goes against what we have been taught since our childhood, leafy vegetables are best avoided during the monsoon season. This is because the dirt and grime present in these vegetables along with the environmental humidity and temperature make them highly susceptible to fungal and bacterial growth. These include vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage and fenugreek leaves. Instead it is best to go for washed pungent vegetables such as bitter gourd, gourd and others.
Seafood like prawns and fish should be absolutely avoided during the monsoon season. This is mainly because of the pathogens and bacteria present in the water during the rainy season. This often infects the fishes and subsequently the person consuming the same. Another reason is that this is also the breeding season that may cause certain changes in the seafood causing harm to the person who consumes them.
Fried and spicy food
However irresistible those pakodas, kachoris and samosas may be, they are an absolute no no during the monsoon season. Though it is still okay to have them once in a while, portion control needs to be exercised to avoid gastronomical complications such as an upset stomach and bloating. It is also advisable to stay away from street foods like gol gappas where water is used as it may be a breeding ground for insects and bacteria, thus causing severe infection.
Mushrooms often grow in damp soil which are the breeding ground for bacterial growth. This increases the risk of infections on consumption.
Monsoon season is also the season of sweating and dehydration which may in turn cause dehydration. It is best to keep lemon water or ginger water in hand rather than those fizzy drinks that can cause weakening of your digestive system by reducing the necessary minerals. This may prove to be undesirable when a person is already grappling with a weak digestive system.
Raw foods provide an instant entry to the pathogens that breed on the raw vegetables. This ultimately takes a toll on your well-being, thus leading to viral and bacterial infections. Cooking helps in killing harmful bacteria present in raw and uncooked veggies.
Monsoon season tends to weaken our digestive system and render it sensitive. It is advisable to go easy even on dairy products and stock up more of clear boiled water and drinks like nimbu paani and shikanji. Do remember, that plate of roadside chhole bature may be hugely comforting, but the comfort derived from it is just momentary while it takes a toll on your vulnerable digestive system.
