WHAT ARE STEM CELLS?

Stem cells are the raw material from which the specialized function cells are generated. These stem cells get divided into healthy daughter cells under the right conditions. It is these daughter cells that further become new stem cells or get developed into specialized cells such as brain cells, heart cells, muscle cells and others. The stem cell has the potential to become different type of cell. Stem cells are endorsed with indefinite cell division potential apart from stem cells, no other cells in our body have the ability to generate new cells.

Types of Stem Cells

Based on trans-differentiation potential, stem cells are categorised into four types viz.

1. Unipotent
2. Multipotent
3. Pluripotent
4. Totipotent
WHERE DO STEM CELLS COME FROM?

Stem cells can be obtained from various sources such as:

  • Embryonic stem cells: These are the stem cells that are taken from 3 to 5 day old embryos. This is because at this stage, these cells are highly versatile and have the ability to regenerate or repair several diseased organs or tissues.
  • Adult stem cells: These are the stem cells that are found in the bone marrow or fat of most adults. Though they have limited ability as compared to the embryonic cells, they are still quite useful in several heart and neurological conditions.
  • Adult cells altered into embryonic cell types: genetic reprogramming has helped the scientists to alter the adult stem cells to behave like embryonic stem cells. This has helped in a wider usage of the reprogrammed cells in the research. Research is still ongoing regarding the usage of these cells in different diseases and disorders.
  • Perinatal stem cells: Research has shown that stem cells are present in the amniotic fluid as well as the umbilical cord blood too. Today, many pregnant women are opting for stem cell preservation during the time of delivery for any later usage.

Stem cells can be acquired from various tissues such as adipose tissue, bone marrow, umbilical cord cells, umbilical cord blood, dental pulp, among others. In cell remedy, these stem cells are expanded and cultured in the cell bank. Cells gathered from adipose tissue, bone marrow, and umbilical cord have unique advantages similar as ease to obtain, absence of threat of vulnerable rejection, immediate availability, minimal risk of complications, infections and disability.

WHY IS STEM CELL THERAPY BECOMING POPULAR?

Stem cell therapy is considered to be a regenerative form of medicine designed for repairing the damaged body cells through modulation and inflammation of the immune system. It is today considered to be a viable treatment option for a variety of conditions such as inflammatory, autoimmune, orthopaedic, neurological and traumatic injury conditions. Studies are ongoing regarding its use in Multiple sclerosis, crohn’s disease, COPD, ALS, Parkinson’s, Stroke recovery and many more. Though stem cells do not heal these conditions, the therapy allows the body to recuperate and heal itself so as to mitigate any long term symptoms of these conditions. Thus, it helps in improving the quality of life as well as delay the progression of the disease.

The broad stem cell research center supports innovation, excellence, and the highest ethical standards focused on taking ground breaking stem cell research discoveries from the laboratory to the patient. We are dedicated to conduct multi-disciplinary and integrated collaboration of scientific, academic, and medical disciplines for the purpose of revolutionizing the treatment of disease through personalized cellular therapies and regenerative medicine.

The Center of Regenerative Medicine holds a broad understanding of regenerative medicine, including:

  • Pluripotent and adult tissue stem cells
  • Cell reprogramming
  • Cell and tissue engineering
  • Development, degeneration, and aging
WHAT IS REGENERATIVE MEDICINE?

Regenerative medicine is a branch of medicine, which emerges through interdisciplinary research integrating various areas similar as cell biology, tissue engineering, gene therapy, cell therapy, cell immunotherapy, 3D bioprinting.

Regenerative medicine is based on the repair, replacement, or regeneration of cells, tissues, and/ or organs by enhancing the self- healing capabilities of the human body. Its vital function is to restore the functionality of the tissues.
