Overview

Bone marrow transplant refers to replacing of unhealthy, diseased or damaged bone marrow stem cells with healthy ones. This medical procedure is performed in patients suffering from severe blood and immune deficiency diseases such as leukemia, multiple myeloma, thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, and others. The transplant procedure of bone marrow is quite similar to donating platelets or blood. These stem cells are important because they produce platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells.

Bone marrow transplants are a safe procedure that is used for the treatment of several cancerous and non cancerous conditions. The patient can resume his or her healthy life within 6 to 12 months of the transplant. There are mainly two types of bone marrow transplants that may be prescribed by the doctor:
