BILIARY SCIENCES

This unit is focused on the treatment of conditions related to the biliary system i.e. bile duct, supporting structures that produce and transport bile juice, and gallbladder. The endoscopy team context major procedure like – ERCP to identify and treat the problems of the bile duct and pancreas. High-end procedures like EUS – endoscopic ultrasound to identify and treat difficult diseases of the gall bladder, bile duct, liver, and pancreas.

INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY

The department also runs dedicated interventional GI radiology which treats various diseases of the liver and intestine like incurable liver cancer (RFA/MWA TACE), bleeding from GI tract (GDA/CA Embolization), difficult to treat biliary cancers.

DIAGNOSTIC ENDOSCOPIC PROCEDURES
  • Colonoscopy: It is carried out to examine the changes or abnormalities of the colon and terminal ileum.
  • Enteroscopy: In this procedure, an enteroscope (flexible, thin tube fitted with a camera at one end) is used to visualize the small intestine.
  • Upper GI endoscopy: In this procedure, an endoscope is used to evaluate and treat the conditions of the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine (duodenum) which all belong to the upper Gastrointestinal tract.
  • Fibroscan: This is an imaging tool (a special ultrasound machine) that is used to detect fatty liver, hepatitis, fibrosis (scarring) and cirrhosis of the liver.
  • Endoscopic Ultrasound: It is a minimally invasive imaging procedure to visualize the changes in the wall or lining of the gastrointestinal tract, chest, liver, pancreas, and lymph nodes.
  • Anorectal Manometry: It is used to assess the contractility ability of the rectum and anus while defecating.
  • Esophageal Manometry: It is used to assess the contractility ability of the esophagus
  • Breath Test: It analyses the person’s breath to check for bacterial overgrowth, fructose malabsorption, and lactose intolerance.
  • 24-hour PH-Metry and impedance – This technique is used to measures the amount of reflux (acidic and non-acidic) into esophagus
INTERVENTIONAL ENDOSCOPIC PROCEDURES
  • Liver biopsy: It involves the extracting a small liver tumor by biopsy punch for analysis and detection of cancer, cirrhosis, inflammation, or infection.
  • Polypectomy: It is an invasive procedure to remove abnormal tissue growths called polyps.
  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) – This technique identifies and treat diseases related to bile duct, pancreatic duct
  • Argon Plasma Coagulation: This is performed for controlling gastrointestinal bleeding by discharging argon particles at atmospheric pressure to coagulate the blood plasma.
  • Trans arterial Chemoembolisation for liver cancer {Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA)/Microwave Ablation (MWA)/Transcatheter Arterial Chemo Embolization (TACE)}: It is a cancer therapy that blocks the blood flow to abnormal liver tissue or tumor.
  • Splenic artery embolization: In this procedure, a small catheter is inserted into the blood vessels for treating the pathology of the splenic arteries.
  • Therapeutic Upper & Lower GI, Endoscopy – To treat diseases of esophagus, stomach duodenum, colon
  • Biliary decompression & Metal stent placement - A procedure done to decompress the biliary tree and permit the normal drainage of bile in biliary malignancies.
  • Pseudo cyst/WOPN Drainage – It is a technique aimed to drain a cyst (ball of fluid) that can sometimes develop as a complication of acute or chronic pancreatitis.
  • Liver Abscess Drainage – In this procedure, Treatment usually consists of placing a tube through the skin into the liver to drain the abscess. Less often, surgery is needed. You will also receive antibiotics for about 4 to 6 weeks. Sometimes, antibiotics alone can cure the infection.

Our gastroenterologists listen carefully to patient symptoms, asking the right questions and conducts the appropriate tests to accurately diagnose the condition. Based on the diagnosis treatment is done to deliver the best outcome.
